How to Find Out Your Blood Type (5 Easy Ways)

Updated 2026-11-07T00:00:00.000Z

In Japan and Korea most people know their blood type by heart. In much of the world, many adults have no idea. Here is how to find out.

1. Donate blood

The simplest way. Blood services test every donation and usually tell you your type afterwards, often through an app or donor card. You help someone else at the same time.

2. Ask your doctor

Your blood type may already be in your medical records if you have had surgery, a transfusion or been pregnant. If not, your doctor can order a test, though some health systems do not do it without a medical reason.

3. Check old documents

Birth records, pregnancy records, military records and some national ID or health cards list blood type. Parents sometimes remember a child’s type from birth.

4. Use a home test kit

Finger-prick kits are sold online and in pharmacies. You mix a drop of blood with reagents on a card and read the result in a few minutes. They are generally reliable if you follow the instructions carefully, but a lab test is the gold standard.

5. Use your parents’ blood types (partly)

If you know both parents’ types, you can narrow down the possibilities with our baby blood type calculator. It cannot tell you your exact type, only which ones are possible.

Why people in East Asia know theirs

In Japan and Korea, blood type is often tested at school or birth and appears on some records. Combined with the popularity of blood type personality, it has become a standard fact people know about themselves, like their birthday.

What our personality test can’t do

Our personality test tells you which pop-culture type your answers resemble. It cannot tell you your real blood type. Only a blood test can.
